Wycoller Country Park (Pendle) |
 |
| |
| From the 15th century the Wycoller area was a sheep farming and weaving community, but the invention of power looms eventually led to the village's decline. In the 1890s there were plans to create a reservoir by damming Wycoller Beck, but fortunately the plan never materialized. 'The Friends of Wycoller' were established in 1948 in an effort to preserve Wycoller Hall and the village. Lancashire County Council bought the land from the Water Board in 1973 and the village and surrounding countryside were designated a Country Park. |

1) The area around Wycoller is very well served with footpaths offering walks of varying severity and length. The area has great scenic, historic and through its association with the Brontes considerable literary interest, and the surrounding countryside and wild moors emphasise the particular character and appeal of Wycoller. Places of interest to visit while walking include the historical hamlet of Wycoller, the Country Park Visitor Centre, Fosters Leap and Boulsworth Hill.
2) Walk the Wycoller Bridges - Seven bridges cross Wycoller beck including the somewhat primitive Clam bridge, together with the Copy House, Clapper, Pack-horse, Laithe Hills and Lowlands bridge and the village bridge near Pierson's House.
3) Visit the ruins of Wycoller Hall. Built at the end of the 16th century the hall is designated with the acclaimed tag of inspiring Charlotte Brontes 'Ferndean Manor' in her novel 'Jane Eyre' and it was apparently used to illustrate the 1898 edition. Charlotte Bronte also frequently visited Wycoller village when walking in the area.
